I wanted to let everyone know the Special Olympic golf tournament was held on Sunday, August 7 @ the Links golf course in North Olmsted. This was the grand finale w/ all local chapters of SO golf from the North East OH region. Over 500 participants (athletes along w/ their coaches). A good time was had by all!!! This is soooooooooooo exciting for the athletes; many of whom are unable to participate in other sports.

The BIGGEST THANK YOU goes to Royal Tee’s Golf whose overly GENEROUS donations and support really made the athlete’s feel SPECIAL! All the athlete’s loved the tees! Maybe it’s the colors, material, or a combination of both but; they were able to hit the ball!! The RT’s made it very easy for them to focus! They’ve been guarding their RT’s w/ their lives! They have never before received such a useful and generous donation!!!

As for my part, well… My athlete, Leslie is nearly paralyzed on her right side, along w/ being mentally retarded and autistic. They were right; she probably is the most “difficult” of students. But, you know me and my patience combined w/ Leslie’s perseverance; we were a good team
Shocking (to me), we won the gold medal for our women’s division! Leslie had never before won anything (she’s 44) and was so EXCITED!!! I was very happy for her. It was quite an accomplishment for us both. She made my problems seem minimal. I really like her and hope to have her as a friend for life.

Thank you for the donation of golf tees for our Trinity Special Olympics Athletes. They were excited to receive them and used them at this past Sunday’s Special Olympics Ohio Area 12 Golf Tournament. The tournament included teams from four counties in the greater Cleveland area.

Trinity Special Olympics is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under the title: Special Olympics Ohio Cuyahoga Trinity. Under the leadership of Local Coordinator Sharon Stark, Trinity Special Olympics has ice skating programs including learn to skate, ice skating, figure skating, speed skating, a hockey team and the golf program.

As director of the Trinity Special Olympics golf program I want to once again thank you for your donation of golf tees to our golf program athletes.

Thank you for your support at the Schupan & Sons, Inc. and American Diabetes golf outing on June 16. I have heard from different people that the “tee” game on the course was very popular. Great idea!!

With your help, we raised over $65,000 to be used to improve the lives of people that fight diabetes. Your participation has helped make this event one of the most distinguished in the Kalamazoo area.

“Jackson lost a dear friend – and a mighty fine human being – in the death Wednesday night of Tony Consolino.

It would be hard to overstate the hole that Mr. Consolino leaves in this community. The new Foote Hospital was built with his fund-raising help. The entire community benefited from his optimistic leadership as chairman of the Greater Jackson Chamber of Commerce during that dark period when Clark Equipment and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. left town. There’s a trail for the blind at the Dahlem Center that is due in part to his help. Because of his tireless management, a small Jackson cleaning business, Aalen Aides, grew into a multimillion-dollar enterprise that has provided a livelihood for dozens of employees. Many civic, business and community groups have been enriched by Mr. Consolino’s wise counsel. His contributions were so diverse that in 1992 the Citizen Patriot named him Citizen of the Year.

Mr. Consolino’s most heartfelt civic involvement in recent years was the “Tony Open,” a golf tournament that has raised about $900,000 for the American Cancer Society. That was a special event to him because of his personal battle with lung cancer – a battle he appeared to have won.

Ironically, though, it wasn’t cancer that took Mr. Consolino, but a heart attack. The doctors might tell you the medical reasons why his heart failed. We would prefer to believe that after a full life of giving, loving and sharing, his heart decided it was time for a much needed rest.

You can multiply all of the good things Tony Consolino did many times over, for he – the son of Italian immigrants – was the patriarch of a large family. Whatever he was to the community, he was first of all an example to the six children he and his wife Emma brought into this world, and to the many grandchildren those children bore. His life will continue speaking through those children and grandchildren because of the strong values he left with them.”

Tony once told the Citizen Patriot: “A community is like a business. You can’t keep taking out of it without putting something back or it starts to deteriorate.” That spirit of giving is the legacy of the founder of the “Tony Open.”
